Why should healthcare organizations outsource their BI Projects to managed service providers?

In many healthcare organizations there are silos of information – patient, operations, and financial data – all warehoused in separate databases. Some of this happened organically but in other cases it has been due to the robust mergers and acquisitions market.

To consolidate this data and make it usable for clinicians, for operations and for finance departments is a huge undertaking but necessary if healthcare organizations are going to compete and survive. Something as seemly simple as a single patient view requires consolidation and access to all of this information.  Healthcare organizations need cohesive operational, financial and clinical data for better clinical decision making and better patient outcomes, along with dashboard reporting for operational decision making and compliance.

So why outsource?
• There is a growing intolerance among business executives for failed projects. BI outsourcers increase the odds that you will reap real value from your BI investments.
• These projects require specialized talent that isn’t necessary to have in house for the long term.

Here is a great case example of how one organization was able to achieve a single patient view from siloed data as well as meet the requirements for compliance. The Greater Baltimore Medical Center (GBMC) is a 270-bed medical center (acute and sub-acute care) located in the Baltimore suburb of Towson, Maryland.  GBMC serves more than 26,700 inpatient cases and approximately 60,000 emergency room visits annually. Its vision is to “provide the care that we would want for our own loved ones to every patient, every time.”

GBMC wanted a single holistic view of each patient however the information was housed across three separate databases - clinical, operational and financial. GBMC wanted to create and implement a data warehouse to provide cohesive operational, financial and clinical data for better clinical decision making and patient outcomes, along with dashboard reporting for operational decision making and ACO compliance.

GBMC was challenged finding a partner that would evolve the current SAP investments without starting from scratch. They selected TriCore to help them with this multi-phase project. The implementation took approximately 12 calendar months from start to finish (both phases) and now 400 users can access over 800 reports as well as gain a single holistic view of each patient.

The results have been outstanding. Medical professionals can see all of the patient’s data which is resulting in better quality and streamlined healthcare. Decision making has become more agile. Reports that used to take 40 minutes to run now take only seconds giving personnel the information they need quickly for faster decision making.

GBMC is now able to get data in a way to make decisions ahead of time. They can also define measures immediately to get the numbers gaining a clearer picture of hospital business operations.  They can be nimble in managing the business based on facts are able to meet the ACO requirements and have since received accreditation.
