SharePoint Replaces Legacy Safety and Compliance Application for a Manufacturing Enterprise

Increasing Adoption and Elevating SharePoint to Mission Critical Status

Many people do not realize the power and versatility of SharePoint.   In more cases than not, it can be leveraged to meet unique needs of organizations at a lower cost allowing businesses to maximize their IT budgets.  What TriCore has found is that SharePoint is often underutilized in organizations because there is no dedicated team managing monitoring, architecting, and tailoring SharePoint to meet the needs of the end user community. This can in turn slow SharePoint adoption. Take for example TriCore’s project with one of customers:

The Challenge
For about ten years, our customer was using a legacy safety and compliance application which was hosted by a third-party and could not be tailored to the specific needs of the business.  This legacy application, although powerful, did not deliver the specific user interface, reporting, workflow, and document management needs required by the user community.  In addition to these features, a new solution would also be required to host content that would be used for auditing.  Security was also a major concern due to proprietary and highly sensitive information concerning the patent-protected manufacturing process.

The Solution
Since our customer was already using SharePoint within their organization, our team recommended that an application could be created in SharePoint that would meet the needs of the business and also cost less than the current annual license of the existing legacy system.  After a thorough review of our recommendation and iterative approach by the customer’s business unit, corporate executive team, and an independent third-party, our recommendation was accepted as the best solution to meet the business requirements.

The Approach and End Results
A traditional approach and solution would have taken at least six months to implement.  However, our team was able to implement a solution in less than three months.  Using SharePoint as the foundation of the solution and also utilizing a tailored approach for our customer, we were able to iteratively collaborate with the business in order to generate requirements, build the specific functionality, conduct prototyping, test the features with the end users as each feature was completed, train the user community, and deploy the solution.

Because of SharePoint’s ability to be tailored to the needs of many different industries due to its service oriented architecture, it was preferable for our client to use SharePoint instead of investing in building another application from start to finish.

Managing and Hosting SharePoint for Our Customer
The customer was also very impressed with the capabilities of TriCore as an organization, which led to a decision to have TriCore host the SharePoint environment in our datacenter.  Since our customer’s SharePoint migration to our datacenter, the application response times have greatly improved and the environment has a dedicated team monitoring SharePoint 24x7…something the customer did not have previously.

A Collaboration Mindset and Transformation for the Customer
SharePoint is considered a mission-critical application for this customer (and for many of our other customers).  However, like most organizations, there was no dedicated team managing, monitoring, architecting, and tailoring SharePoint to meet the needs of the end user community, which in turn, slowed SharePoint adoption.  By tailoring the environment and having dedicated support, adoption has grown much faster within the company and has expanded collaboration from using email as a management and coordination tool to actually utilizing SharePoint as an enterprise collaboration application.

When organizations take the time to tailor the environment and have dedicated support, adoption grows much faster within the company and a result it expands collaboration and elevates SharePoint to an enterprise collaboration application that is mission critical to business.
